Announcement of Job Opening English Teaching Position

Miyazaki Municipal University invites applications for one English teaching position.

 

1. Research Field: Second Language Acquisition; Applied Linguistics; TESOL

2. Position: Lecturer (part-time)

3. Number of positions: 1

4. Duties and Salary:

(1) Assigned Coursework: 7-8, 90-minute classes per week, for each of two 16-week semesters

For this position, you will required to teach the English I, II, and III courses. English I, II, and III are required courses and consist of two modules: Reading and Writing. Each module meets once a week for 90-minutes. One instructor teaches both modules to groups of 25-30 students. English I and III are offered in the Spring Semester and English II is offered in the Fall. In addition, you may be required to teach other courses offered in the English Language Program such as listening and speaking, and TOEIC Preparation. (2) Other duties may include:

a. developing course materials (include creating/managing online course resources (Moodle, Xreading.com, EnglishCentral.com, Quizlet, etc.))

b. providing student support during office hours

c. carrying out duties related to university administration

5. Terms of employment:

(1) One year contract (non-tenure track)

Term of contract is from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019. Following an annual review, contract may be renewed for 4 additional years for a possible maximum term of employment of 5 years.

(2) Weekly Hours:

You will be required to be on campus Monday – Friday for a total of 35 hours per week.

(3) Salary:

Approximately ¥328,300 per month

*Bonus and severance pay are not provided.

(4) Holidays:

In addition to national holidays and New Year’s holiday (December 29 – January 3), you may take 20 days annual paid vacation and an annual summer holiday of 5 days.

6. Qualifications:

(1) Native speaker of English, or an equivalent level of English ability

(2) Post-graduate degree (MA / Phd.)* in English as a Second Language, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, etc.

*Although holders of a post-graduate degree are preferred, any candidate with significant experience teaching English at the university level will also be considered.

(3) Experience teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language courses at the university level

(4) High level of Japanese speaking ability

7. Starting date: April 1, 2018

(4) two letters of recommendation from those who are well-acquainted with the applicants knowledge and experience (include name, job title, and place of employment of person providing recommendation)

(5) copies of three research publications (if available)

For non-Japanese applicants:

(7) any available proof of Japanese language proficiency (such as a research publication in Japanese, results of a Japanese language proficiency test, or self-written description of current language ability)

(1) Please complete Form 1 (略歴書  様式 1) and Form 2 (履歴書  様式2) in Japanese.

(2) Information provided on application documents will be kept in strictest confidence.

9. Application deadline: October 31, 2017 (Application documents must be received by this date.)

10. Selection process:

Upon completion of an initial screening, all applicants will be notified. Successful applicants will then have an interview in both English and Japanese at the campus of MMU (Scheduled date: November 25, 2017). After the interview, applicants will give a demonstration lesson. Details of interview and demonstration lesson will be provided later.

*Travel expenses to and from interviews must be paid by the applicants.

11. Date of final notification:

The successful applicant will be notified by Around mid-December, 2017.
